To love nature, we must first know it

This summer, we are continuing our efforts to make residents of our neighborhood, and others, aware that the nearby forest is an invaluable treasure, to know and understand it better, so that we can protect and care for it more effectively. For this, together with Professor Viorel Căpățână and some of the neighborhood residents, I organized Greenfield Birdwatching Club. 
As we expected, the most receptive to our initiative were the little ones, proving to us once again, if there was any need, that when it comes to nature, they are already many steps ahead of the adults, who are sometimes too careless with the environment.
A sun filled with the warmth of children's hearts warmed us throughout the day, protecting us from the rain, and when even it yielded, the dense and cool foliage of Băneasa Forest.
On well-trodden paths or on newer ones, we embarked together on a journey that was both fun and educational.
We learned to identify bird species by their trills and then observe them searching for food or repairing the nests and houses that we ourselves lovingly installed last fall.
Blackbirds, woodpeckers, finches, starlings, jays, and sparrows seemed to enjoy our presence, and we, careful not to disturb them too much, thanked them for their hospitality.
I left them fruits and seeds in the feeders specially mounted for them, wished them bon appétit, and then, tired but happy after a few hours of hiking in #BucharestButDifferent we're back „to the base.”.
We've consolidated our new knowledge and wrung a promise out of the professor that he'll return and help us in the future. We still have plenty of species to see and hear.
Nature has so much to offer. We just need to take a little more care of it, and it will reveal itself to us in all its joy and splendor.
